Scholarships

  • Scholarships are available to applicants of all ages
  • Scholarship priority is given according to artistic merit. 
  • Scholarship funds are limited and generally only cover a portion of tuition and room & board expenses

Meadowmount is pleased to award the following named scholarships annually:

Ivan Galamian Scholarship

This award honors the founding father of Meadowmount and is given to a significant musician demonstrating potential for an important professional career in music.

Sally G. Thomas Scholarship

This award honors Ms. Thomas and her long career at Meadowmount. It was first awarded in 2014, Meadowmount’s 70th Anniversary, and is awarded annually to an outstanding violinist.

Stephen Kates Scholarship

This scholarship fund was created in 2012 with a generous contribution from Mrs. Mary Louise Kates to honor the memory of her husband. The Stephen Kates Scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding cellist.

Stephen Kates was the silver prizewinner in the 1966 Tchaikovsky International Cello Competition, a longtime faculty member at the Peabody Institute of Music, and Leonard Rose’s student at Meadowmount in 1961 and 1962.

Virginia Farmer Scholarship

Meadowmount School of Music alumna Dr. Virginia Farmer passed away on June 11, 2013, in Urbana, IL. Her entire collection of violins, violas and bows was bequeathed to Meadowmount to establish a “Virginia Farmer Memorial Scholarship” fund for deserving violin students. She attended Meadowmount from 1950 to 1955 as a violin student of Ivan Galamian and was coached in chamber music by Josef Gingold and Leonard Rose. The Virginia Farmer Scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding violinist or violist.

Financial Support

Meadowmount is committed to providing equitable access and to expanding recruitment efforts to invite, welcome, and train young musicians from all backgrounds and particularly from traditionally underrepresented communities across the United States.

At Meadowmount, we are building a welcoming student experience that supports belonging, growth, and purpose for every aspiring pre-professional musician. Through the application process we seek to understand the needs of all eligible students and equitably grant available funds.

Service Awards

  • Students age 16 and older may receive a Service Award of $1,000 which is reflected as a credit towards tuition balance prior to the start of the summer program.
  • Service Award recipients are assigned a specific role and are an important part of the Meadowmount team.
  • The expectation is that Service Award recipients will work an average of 10 hours a week for the 7 weeks of the program.

Service Award recipients are assigned a specific role. Current Service Award roles include:

  • Artistic Operations Support (Music Library and Viola Bank)
  • Meadowmount Canteen (Snack Bar and Merchandise)
  • Concert Support (Stagehands, Recording & AV Assistance)
  • Front of House (Concert Usher & Greeter)
  • Communications (Photography, Social Media, Concert Programs)
  • Camp Office Support (Mail, Package Management, General Support)
  • Facilities Support (Gardening & Maintenance Support)
  • Recreation (Student Activities Support)

Resident Assistants

  • Resident Assistants are paid a partial stipend equivalent to Room & Board which is provided as a credit prior to the start of the summer program.
  • Resident Assistants are an important part of the Meadowmount summer staff team.
  • They are assigned to 18+ dorms and responsible for building community within the dorm and serving as the primary liaison between the Camp Office and the 18+ dorms.
  • They are responsible for working proactively to resolve student concerns relating to their housing and life in the dorms.
  • They also serve as a staff representative for organized field trips and activities.
  • Estimated work / on-call hours per week: 25 hours
  • Resident Assistants are asked to arrive on campus early for training. For 2025: June 18 through August 10.

Counselor Positions

  • Counselors are paid a full stipend equivalent to their Tuition and Room & Board. (In the case of parents or guardians who serve as Counselor, a partial stipend equivalent to their student’s Tuition is paid.)
  • Counselors are a critical part of the Meadowmount summer staff team and are considered seasonal staff first, and student second. 
  • In making the decision to apply for the Counselor position, students are encourage to weigh the responsibilities and requirements of the position alongside artistic and learning goals for the summer.
  • Counselors are assigned to Under-18 dorms and responsible for the safety and care of their assigned students at all times. 
  • In addition to working to build community in the dorms and creating a safe and welcoming environment, Counselors are expected to resolve a variety of issues with the support of the Camp Office.
  • In addition to supervising students within their dorm, Counselors are responsible for monitoring under-18 students during the afternoon and on weekends and actively plan and lead clubs, activities, and field trips.
  • Between work and on-call hours, the Counselor position is considered full-time. 
  • Counselors are asked to arrive on campus early for training. For 2025: June 15 through August 10.
